Botox® and Dermal Fillers in Dentistry
Dr. Chet Swartzentruber has completed advanced clinical training through the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) in the use of Botox® and dermal filler medications in dentistry.
Botox® (botulinum toxin A) has been used for many years to smooth facial wrinkles and soften lines and crow's feet around the eyes. Dentists today are using it as part of the cosmetic process to help patients achieve a youthful, pleasing smile appearance in conjunction with cosmetic dental treatments such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers. Dermal fillers may be used in combination with Botox® for lip augmentation and to plump facial skin areas that have lost fullness.
Botox® has demonstrated therapeutic properties in the treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD/TMJ). During TMJ therapy, it may be used as part of an overall pain management treatment plan. When injected into the jaw joint muscles, Botox® can relax "trigger" movements to provide relief from jaw joint pain.
Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm also have clinical application in cosmetic dentistry procedures; these and other facial fillers can be a non-surgical alternative to correct a high lip line or to make an asymmetrical lip line look more natural. They may also be used to encourage gum tissue growth to fill in areas around dental restorations where the gum line has receded (sometimes known as "black triangles" because the space creates a dark area in the patient's smile).
